    Miniature Australian Shepherd Dog Breed

The Miniature American Shepherd, commonly abbreviated MAS, is a small herding dog breed. The MAS is highly intelligent and biddable. If you’re already a proud owner of MAS, you may already know that this breed often excels in dog sports such as herding, agility, obedience, canine freestyle, etc. They have an eye-catching coat which is usually black, blue, and red.

The Miniature American Shepherd is a small canine with 14-18 inches height for males and 13-17 inches for females. A fully grown MAS may grow 2-3 inches more than their regular average height.

Miniature Australian Shepherds dogs are bulky breeds and slightly longer than tall. They have little round heads, medium-size muzzles, and almond-shaped eyes. Also, their ears are triangular-shaped with deep chests and straight tails. The MAS has a medium-length, weather-resistant coat that’s slightly wavy, creating a little bit of a mane.

As Mini Australian Shepherd is not a giant dog breed, they reach their full size at a much younger age when compared to larger breeds. While they could still gain weight up to about a year and a half, they generally reach their adult size at around nine months of age. But that doesn’t mean their growth will stop altogether after reaching that age.

Even if your Mini Australian Shepherd has reached his final size, remember that he is still a puppy and will exhibit puppy-like behaviors. They still have other development to do that goes beyond their physical size.

Mini Australian Shepherds Size Comparison – Male vs. Female

Male and female Australian Shepherds distinguished in only a few factors. And the main distinctions are their physical characteristics, like their size, bone thickness, muscles, etc. The female breeds are usually smaller than the male breeds.

A healthy female Mini Australian shepherd dog may weigh between 20-40 pounds with a height of 12-16 inches. Also, a female MAS has a lower coat thickness and length than male breeds.

The male Mini Australian shepherds are slightly larger than the females in weight and height. The moderate height of the male dog is about 14-18 inches and weighs between 30-50 pounds.

How Fast Do Mini Australian Shepherds Grow?

Usually, you can anticipate MAS canines to grow at a decently quick rate. They will almost be at their full size at as young as six to eight months. Yet, they are smaller dogs in general, and they do not grow much as the bigger dogs.

You may see MAS growing at a quicker pace at a physical level; however, they usually take a significant amount of time for their mental growth. Because of their genetic pool, some Mini Australian Shepherds tend to grow much faster than their average growing pattern.

There is considerable variance in weight and growth speed among this dog breed. It can be challenging to predict their weight or at what age they’ll be fully grown. On another note, different breeding methods are also a factor that defines their growth.

How Big Does A Mini Australian Shepherd Get?

The Mini Australian shepherd is of medium size, and this compact-sized canine is a little longer than it is tall. The maximum height of a female dog varies between 13–17 inches, and a male dog grows between 14–18 inches. Sometimes, you might see a MAS rising above these ranges, which, of course, depends on their genetic levels.

Most Miniature Australian Shepherds are considered small to medium dogs because they weigh about 30-55 pounds. Interestingly, they have a medium bone arrangement that suggests strength proportional to body size and height. Some dogs can weigh as much as 60 pounds, which technically doesn’t make them miniature.

When Do Mini Australian Shepherds Stop Growing?

Talking about the height of Miniature Australian Shepherds, they usually stop growing after reaching 9-10 months of age. But for some breeds, it has been observed that they still grow after nine months to attain their full size. They get their total weight anywhere from 9 months to 1.5 years of age.

While they may stop growing physically after 1 year of age, they still develop their brains for 2 to 3 years. They will take their own pace and time to learn the characteristics of an adult dog, and that varies on breeds and genetics.

How Long Do Mini Australian Shepherds Live?

The median Mini Australian Shepherd life expectancy is 12 years, but some live significantly longer. In a UK survey involving ten years of breed health data, owners of the longest living Mini Australian shepherd reported the dog’s lifespan at 15 years.

According to AKC, a healthy Miniature Australian Shepherd’s estimated lifespan is 12-13 years. However, some show relatively long life expectancy and usually live between 13 and 15 years.

    Final Thoughts

To wrap it all up, the adorable Miniature Australian Shepherd has an inherently trademark or anchored bobtail. Amazingly, it is a well-balanced, medium-sized, elegant canine. Ideally, male dogs should be 14 to 18 inches tall, and females should be 14 to 17 inches tall.

This little shepherd loves sports with its family and makes a delicate playmate for kids and other pets. So, if you’re looking to adopt a small toy pet, a Miniature Australian Shepherd can be a good choice for you.
